Future State

We have been working closely with Ilkley-based design consultants James Marshall and Aimee Maxwell-Stewart to help establish our proposal for the new Rail Station scheme.

Areas of Improvements

Collectively we have identified some key initial areas of improvement that we envisage could be phased in to a pilot
scheme to encourge further investment
and generate interest within the community to ‘get on board’ with our wider proposal.

The following key components form the basis of our overall new scheme:

  • 01 | Planters

The planters will be positioned throughout the station along both platforms as depicted in the presentation. There will be a significant planter at the head of platform 1 & 2 including integral seating. The planters themselves will be manufactured in Mild steel, galvernised and powder coated in a faux CorTen Steel colour similar to a railway rail. The seating will be manufactured of British Oak.

The planting will compliment the surrounding native flora from the woodlands and moorland around Ilkley and provide a habitat for insect life.

  • 02 | Public Realm & Landscaping

New garden/landscaped area between Platform one and the bus station. To emphasise the “transport hub of Ilkley” we want to landscape the area between platform 1 and the bus station as shown in the presentation.

Today the area between the two is cluttered and the visibility between the two hidden. The planting will compliment the surrounding native flora from the woodlands and moorland around Ilkley and provide a habitat for insect life.

  • 03 | Biodiverse Planting

The area at the end of platform two where the pedestrian footbridge is located, is a perfect place to create a native wild flower meadow. With the use of reclaimed sleepers forming walls throughout, the area will provide a haven for wildlife in what is currently a wasteland. The poor soil will allow the wildflowers to thrive preventing the need for much maintenance. The planting of trees in amongst will allow the ecosystem to develop.

The bridge provides the perfect viewing platform for local schools and the public alike to get a birds eye view safely. Potentially the addition of artworks by local artists during Ilkley’s art trail (curated locally) would attract visitors to explore a lesser footfall area. This would be relatively inexpensive to achieve and provide a real statement piece on arrival into Ilkley.

  • 04 | Public Drinking Water

We propose to position and install public water refill stations/fountains at the station to help reduce the use/impact of single-use plastic bottles in Ilkley.

We are working with Anne Cuthbertson from the group ‘Plastic Free Ilkley’.

  • 05 | Public Seating

There will be number of forms of seating, seating with integrated information boards constructed of locally quarried flat top sawn stone, these will be of a rectangular shape and positioned on both platforms.

In addition there will be significant locally quarried flat top sawn stone seating bordering the garden area on the platform side between platform 1 and the bus station.

  • 06 | Facilities (Toilets)

It’s long been an issue with the lack of toilets at the station, included in the proposal are toilets (3) to be positioned on platform 1 next to the open-air waiting room. This will provide easy access for all from both bus and rail users.

  • 07 | Wayfinding, Signage & Advertising

The signage/wayfinding will consist of four types:

    1. Promoting certain visitor attractions in Ilkley. These will be typically be placed in the above described seating.

    2. 2 to 3 of Ilkley Rail Station heritage signs informing of the historical details of the station. These will be placed at station entry / exit points.

    3. At the top end of platforms 1 & 2 there will be a digital screen displaying information relating to events / places / and companies based in Ilkley. All of the above signage will be tightly integrated into Discover Ilkley.

    4. Finally improved directional signage for people arriving to Ilkley to help them on their way.
